Discussion on Deadly force
When not to use and when we have no other choice
If bad guy wants your keys, wallet, purse and you feel your life is not threatened give it to them.. His life, your life is not worth any material object.
If you feel you have no other choice but to defend your life, then do so aggressively, confidently, and with no remorse.
How to handle situation when deadly force has been used..
Be certain situation is under control
Remove any weapon that is in reach of downed suspect
Call 911, tell dispatch you have been attacked and had to defend yourself with lethal force to please send police/ambulance to this address, Explain what your wearing so the officers will easily identify you. Do not go into question and answer time on phone (my personal opinion)
When police arrive set weapon down in front of you and follow their instructions
Explain what happened to the best of your recollection (this event will cause memory lapses)
They will take your firearm and take you to the dept for further discussion, you may want to start looking for a attorney..
8) Physiology and Situational Awareness
NOTES:
When this happens you will see individuals in a tunnel vision state
So a great habit is after firing your weapon you turn and survey your surroundings.
This will help you pull out of the tunnel that many people find themselves in when under high stress.
Gun fights last for only a few seconds at best..
Looking at 1 second in 1/4 sec intervals, then 10th - 100th of a second
If we can slow down the other guy by resetting his clock or OODA loop then we will always have the highest % of surviving that encounter in our favor. Action always beats reaction.
Example;
When being drawn upon side step and draw, resetting his OODA cycle to 1 (observe)
Situational awareness;
Condition White is that level of mental awareness that we'd all like to live in if this were a perfect world. That is: unaware and unprepared. In Condition White you're an easy victim. An easy mark. Criminals look for people in Condition White because they can catch them by surprise and easily overwhelm them.
Condition Yellow is where you want to be. Condition Yellow is best described as relaxed and alert. You're aware of your environment. You are walking down the street with your hands at your sides—your head is up—you're looking around. You're using all of your senses.
This is not a state of paranoia. You are simply relaxed and alert.
Condition Orange is the next level of mental awareness. For example you are in Condition Yellow, you're aware of what's going on around you and you see something out of the ordinary, your senses are telling you something is not as it should be, so listen to them—you immediately ramp up to Condition Orange.
In Condition Orange, you need to do 2 Things:
First, you must make some evasive maneuver which forces your opponent to show his hand.
Second, you must start formulating that tactical plan in the event that this is a real threat. The evasive maneuver forces your opponent to show whether his actions are just a coincidence OR he's actually a predator looking for prey.
Condition Red is that level of mental awareness you reach when you know the threat is real. There's no doubt they're after you. In Condition Red you must set a mental trigger. You must draw a line in the sand. If you don't set a mental trigger or draw a line in the sand, at that moment of truth when you should be active, when you should be shooting, when you should be running, whatever it is you should be doing -- you may just be talking to yourself. And talking to yourself when you should be shooting will get you killed.
Sequentially it works like this: You say to yourself, "I'm going to do X. If my opponent does Y, I'm doing Z." End of story. Decision is made. You draw the mental line in the sand, if your opponent steps over it, you know what to do and You Do It!
Condition Black is that point when your opponent trips your mental trigger and crosses your mental line in the sand. I'm going to talk about Condition Black in terms of a gunfight, but it can be applied to any type of lethal encounter.
At the point your opponent trips that mental trigger, at the point where he crosses the line in the sand, you ramp into Condition Black and this is where the Combat Mindset comes into play.
Simply stated, The Combat Mindset is the ability to block everything else out and focus on the one thing that's going to get you through that gunfight. Now what is the One Thing that you should be focusing on in a gunfight?
Attitude/frame of mind
When the time comes to defend you/family you must become the predator.
Training is important but confidence and frame of mind is equally as important. Never quit. And always stay in the fight.
Hesitate and you can lose, and lose big!!
60 to 80 beats per minute
You can consciously remember what to do. The forebrain is for reason and abstraction: "If this happens then I'll do this". At this nominal stress level you function normally.
115 beats per minute
Vasoconstriction starts. Your body starts to close down in a way similar to being in a cold environment. The body core temperature is maintained but you lose motor skills. This can make the removal of your pistol from the holster more difficult. You might drop the pistol. By now most prudent people would have removed their pistol from the holster and directed it .. its open end … toward the stimulus in question.
115-150 beats per minute
Fight or flight. All fine motor skills are now gone. Your forebrain is still working. You can aim the pistol in a gross way but have lessened control over the trigger. You might not know that you have even pulled the trigger or you might think that you have pulled the trigger but actually have not.
175 beats per minute
Your forebrain is hijacked by midbrain -- the primitive part. You don't bleed much if you are bitten. Blood is now being directed to your large muscle groups so that you can fight to the death. The midbrain is for fight, flight, feeding, fury. You will physically be unable to think or even remember. You will do only what you have been well conditioned to do.
Of all Law Enforcement Officers killed by attackers in the line of duty:
- 91% of the time the engagement was within 20 feet;
- 67% of the time the engagement was within 10 feet;
- Average time of engagement from start to finish, 2.5 seconds;
- 80% occurred during hours of darkness.
There is an 80% probability that if you are killed by an attacker in the line of duty, it will be in the dark, up close, and fast!
